Study Spaces: Life Sciences Learning Common

This is an archived post from May 1, 2017 written by Emmanuel during his 4th year in the Environmental Politics, Justice and Arts stream of the Bachelor in Environmental Studies.  Emmanuel launched the Environmental Studies “Eco-Tour” blog with his posts for Eco-Navigating the YU Campus.  His posts serve as a guide to York University’s Keele Campus, highlighting some of some of Emmanuel’s “go-to” places for studying, relaxation, and getting in-touch with the more natural features/spaces of the university.

The entrance to the Life Sciences Building Learning Commons: Not just for students studying the Life Sciences.

The Life Sciences Learning Commons, located in the Life Science Building, is one of the newer study areas at York University. It has within it a few study rooms, couches, and tables set up for those who need a place to study.

The Space's Significance

As you have probably figured out by now, York is a pretty big university meaning that finding places to actually sit down and try to get some work done might prove difficult (Especially at the end of term). The Life Sciences Learning Common is an answer to these prayers. Although small, the space within the Commons is well laid out giving students enough space to get their work done.

The atmosphere here is also different as the setup of the room (as pictured below) allows for easy interaction between students and lets lots and lots of natural light in giving the space a sort of cafe feel (if that makes sense). One thing I liked about the common was the open space available (seeing as not many students make use of it). I, of course, often made use of it during the exam period.
