Study Spaces: Steacie Science & Engineering Library

This is an archived post from April 24, 2017 written by Emmanuel during his 4th year in the Environmental Politics, Justice and Arts stream of the Bachelor in Environmental Studies.  Emmanuel launched the Environmental Studies “Eco-Tour” blog with his posts for Eco-Navigating the YU Campus.  His posts serve as a guide to York University’s Keele Campus, highlighting some of some of Emmanuel’s “go-to” places for studying, relaxation, and getting in-touch with the more natural features/spaces of the university.

An inside look at the Staecie Science and Engineering Library.  Not just for Science and Engineering Students!

Located in the Steacie Building on Keele Campus, the Steacie Science and Engineering Library (aka Steacie, rhyming with Lacy) is another one of York University's five libraries. It was named after Ned Steacie, a prominent research chemist and houses 90,000 books in general science, mathematics, and statistics. There are two floors at Steacie: The first is where you can find the circulation desk, staff and librarian offices, group study rooms, silent study areas, computers for student use, the book collection, and recent journals. The basement floor is comprised of a print journal collection, a computer lab, and more student study space.

The Space's Significance:

Steacie Library, although smaller than Scott, has its own charm. Its location, for example, often leaves it overlooked by students. I have found that its smaller size also makes it less desirable to some students. These two reasons usually end up opening up quite a bit of study space that I have often taken advantage of (Study space is a hot commodity!).

The set up in the library is similar to Scott but with a lot more open space. There are large windows that let in natural light allowing for a well lit study session. There are also various couches scattered around the library that are easy to fall asleep in if ever the need arises (and believe me the need will arise). By far, my favorite area in Steacie is the booths located past the study rooms when you enter the library (pictured below). It's where I often go when I need to focus on a paper and want little distraction. This works perfectly as the area is isolated and usually has an open table.

My favourite study spot in Staecie.
